Research - The Annotated Examples Of Existing Texts

This shows my annotating examples of existing text, i did this to find out research. i did three annotations of each page, Front Page, Content Page and Double Page. I did these annotations from real magazine products-

The first textual analysis i did was of a front page - Billboard Magazine

The next analysis textual analysis i did was - 'Q' Magazine

The last front page textual analysis i did was - Teen Now Magazine

Evaluation of front pages-
I wrote about and researched three different front covers of magazines make billboard, teen now and Q, I choose these three different types because I would learn different ways of how they theses magazines meets the needs and conventions of their demographics. I explained each picture in detail about the different codes and conventions, theories, features and modes of address this will help me with the designing, layout and written information of the magazine I’ll make because I learnt different ways of setting out a magazine.
The magazine front covers mainly use codes and conventions when creating the front covers; they use things such as the masthead at the top of the page this is a code and convention as mainly all magazine covers have their masthead at the top of the magazine. The main reason for this is because when the magazine is on shelves and placed above each other you only see the title of the magazine name as the rest overlap the other information.
Another convention which codifies to an audience, i researched was that two out of three of my magazines i researched have a top banner and bottom banner. This was extra information which needed to be added into the magazine but need to have special places to fit. i found that the bottom banner is usually saying the other singers which are in the magazine and top banner is a extra story or about the actual magazine which needs a place on the front page.
Also another convention I found when researching different magazines was having attractive singers or singer on the front cover as a main central image, when the photo is of women it usually will follow the male gaze theory as they present the women in a sexual pose or how men will like to see the women and when both they will use hyper reality to make the artist look better and edited then in reality. This is a usual code and convention as the three magazine front covers I found used this.
The other code and convention I found that magazines use is having a three colour scheme. This makes each magazine look professional in its own way as they use three colours to recognise the magazine make. The three colours usually follow through to the other pages in the magazine to keep the magazine looking familiar to the audience.
The last code and convention I found each magazine I looked at used semiotics such are circles with important information and ear pieces with free incentives these are the small information which either wants to make the reader buy the magazine to read the important information or receive the free incentive. Theses codes and conventions have given me ideas of how to layout my magazine and what to add to the magazine front cover.
The magazine front covers use the male gaze theory when selecting women’s pictures to put on music stories, I found that the magazine companies will put attractive, sexual and powerless posing women on the front cover as this is what would attract men, make them think they have power over the women and to make them look through the rest of the magazine, it is a use of iconography because it is the different ways of using images.
They use the Maslow’s hierarchy of need as it shows the audiences dreams and aspirations, this is where the magazine will make the audience fulfil to look and act like the people presented on the front cover of the magazine, this hierarchy puts dreams and aspirations above the mains needs of a person’s life such as food. This makes my idea of creation of magazine by having someone who would be people’s dreams and aspirations on the front cover.
The magazines uses the use and gratification theory by telling the audience information, giving them different entertainment, having different personal identifications by aiming each magazine at a certain group of people and social interaction. I found that I need to add this theory to keep my audience interested in the magazine.
The magazines I researched needed ways of talking to the audience, this was the mode of address. They did this by adding buzz words; theses are exciting and interesting words which attract the audiences as they what the audience first see. The buzz words are in big bold letter and are about the most important information in the small story features, they standout because the writer wants the audience to see these words the most the different Buzz words stands are codified as they stand out to different audiences such as the buzz word HOT would stand out the girls/women and the buzz word SEXY would stand out to boys/men.
When writing about each magazine it gave me different ideas and theories to use in my magazine. I found out about the different features and layouts of a magazine and this helped me in my construction work of the music magazine I created.

The first textual analysis i did of a Content page - NME Magazine

The next analysis textual analysis i did was - 'Q' Magazine
The last Content page textual analysis i did was - BillBoard Magazine

Analysis of content pages
From the Content pages and researching three different one i have found most contents follow the same codes and conventions and the same sort of layout through each different page, with the three magazines I researched I found that all content pages will have every pages number and the title of all pages, this is a small guide to help readers get around the magazine when reading it. Each magazines code and convention on a contents page is to have a numbers content which are organised with the titles and subtitles of each stories they tell readers the stories on each page; it is a convention for the numbers to be in a chronological number order. This convention is to help each reader as the numbers are in order in each section it makes the readers find a page quicker rather than looking in an unordered page.
Another code and convention which is used when creating a content page is having a main central image, each content page I researched had a main central this was usually about a well known singer or artist. This had a following story on one the pages so each magazine had the numbers of the pages on the corners of them, this is because the full story was on that certain page, so each person would not need to look  through each page to find that certain story line.
Each magazine content page has a way of mode of address this is exchanging with the readers on all the content pages, this is done by having a website which the readers can go to which they can receive more information or entre competitions. This is a way of using the uses and gratification theory, this is because the magazines use the contents pages to entertain and exchange with the audience. This makes more readers for the magazine and for their websites. It helps to sell more stories and if people don’t buy the magazine they can see it online.
All content pages represent the name of the magazine name again; this reminds the reader of what magazine they are reading. This is a code and convention of all magazines as they present their magazine names on the front page and the content page, they do it different ways such as using the name to start the title of the content page or just having the name in little just on the top of the magazine.
The content pages are full of information; these pages hold a lot of information on one page they our jammed packed with information that needs to be stored on the page, it has the extra information which can build more attractions to the pages. One of the extra information items which our added is a editors letters this is where the editors writes their own message into the magazine to inform the readers of different activates which they think our good to read.
I found that all content pages make readers feel that they have to follow the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs this is because the content pages put the self actualization at the top of the hierarchy of needs instead of what people would need such as physiological needs. This is done by having stories and photos which people dream and aspire to be like on the pages making more people read through the whole magazine.
Another feature i found magazine contents use is making their photos look hyper real this is done by making the photos more attractive to the reader more. This is done with the way the magazine appeals to the different demographics, each magazine will change the way the present photos in the magazine because of who they aim their audience at.
The Content pages i researched also used the uses and gratification theory this was because all of them provided the right information, entertainment, social interaction and personal identification to their demographics. This was done by the information was what they wanted to see, they have interest of what they read by the entertainment, people have social interaction because what they see would grow a topic and personal identification as the demographics where successful as the right audiences would be reading it.
From the three of my contents i researched i found that they all have most of the same mode of address, also i found out different ways of presenting my magazine to my audience. This gave me ideas of how my content page will look and what to add on it. I know that i will have my page numbers in chorological order and have stories which use the uses and gratification.

The first textual analysis i did of a Double page spread - 'Q' Magazine

The next analysis textual analysis i did was - NME Magazine

The last Double page spread textual analysis i did was - Now Magazine

On the analysis of the double page spreads

I found the magazines I researched used some of the same layout and format when creating the magazine. They used codes and conventions one of these where having a main image on one of the pages and having the story on the other side, this is because the double page spread talks about one story main as the story is linked in both pages. The main image will be on the artists the stories are about this because it is relevant to the other page making it a double page spread, the photo will go will go with the story and show stereotypes. Another code and convention that double page spreads use is having each section of the story start with a big capital letter, this is because the audience should be aware when a new section is starting when writing the story. I found that another convention that most double page spreads use is having the title of the page go across both pages, this is done because it is the same story going across both pages, and this should keep the audiences from being confused on when to turn the page and from not knowing when to turn the page. The double page spreads all have a certain modes of address; each spread has its own way of talking to the audience they use information boxes about the artists, quotes or ear pieces which all are different ways of attracting the audience when reading the pages, it’s not just a load of information its laid out in a way that the audience would enjoy to read. The double page spreads use columns to write the stories usually use between 2 – 3 columns per a story on the page this is a usual way of writing about the stories and the way of laying out the information. This is a usual code and convention because most magazines follow the rules. In each magazine on each story the font and style would change when talking about a story with women the font would be girly when talking about men it was a bold font. The magazines on the double page spread use the three colour scheme format; each of the magazines I researched used the three colours throughout the layout of the pages. The colours made the magazine look professional as if the colours were too many it would make the magazines look unprofessional.  Most magazines use the format in all pages through the magazine but can change one of the colours in the double page spread just to change with the story such as the ‘NME’ which is red, black and white but in the double page spread its blue, black and white. Each double page spread has different ways of laying out the page, some just have one picture but a large picture between the two pages, some double page spreads can have one main picture and little pictures around or on the side this is because the double page spread may talk about another story on the side but it will relate to the same topic, this gave me ideas of how to design my double page spread as i researched different layouts i could present my magazine it. Some of the photos on the pages can follow the theories of the male gaze, magazines which have female singers in them will have the photos where the women is posed for a man or is half naked. This makes more readers attracted into reading the stories as women are stereo typed into reading artist news and information but the male gaze attracts men too.I found that magazines use on double page spreads the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs this is putting the dreams and aspirations of their audiences above the general needs of everyday life. Most magazine post pictures or stories of what their audiences dream and aspire to be like, this attracts the audiences to read the magazine and have the needs to fulfil this dream. Another theory which i found that most double page spread use the uses and gratification theory, this is because most pages i found used it well  this is from the way they are presented, it uses information well as it provides a lot about the artist or singers which grabs attention. Also it provides entertainment as people grow and interest and makes people escape from the everyday life stories. The last feature of the uses and gratifications that i found double page spreads using is the personal identification this is because the way they aim their magazine at a certain audience they do this with the presentation and stories. This explains why people interact with the media and why people enjoy reading it. Most double page spreads i looked at when researching i found that most photos of women and some men are done from hyper reality. This is because most editors have made singers look different to how they look in real life. This is done by the editing of the bodies and faces make them look fake but how the people think they should look. This grows more readers mainly men as they enjoy this look and like they way females are presented relating to the male gaze. The double page spreads are presented the same but have different layouts and colours but have most the usual codes and conventions, when creating the my magazines double page spreads I will use the codes and conventions of a double page spread but change some of the conventions.

From annotating the different existing texts i found that this has taught me about codes and conventions of a magazine, i found how to cater for a music audience and how other publishers design magazines. Each different page has made me think about different ideas such as stories, images and designs that i could include onto my pages. I have felt that annotating the pages has made me understand about theories and techniques which are helpful to use in a magazine, from this research task i have learnt that i will be more able create a magazine which will have features such as banners, buzz words, three colour scheme and images which are very attracting.
